The build-to-rent sector is going through unprecedented growth in Australia with a huge number of projects being planned, in progress or set to start construction in the next 12 months.

The gap between demand and supply of apartment constructions nation-wide along with the projected intensification of this shortfall has surged interest in the build-to-rent model across both private and institutional investors.

Crown Group's Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Iwan Sunito says the biggest shift is in developing stock that generates a recurring income and Crown Group will grow its serviced apartment and build-to-rent arms to beyond $2bn.

AUSTRALIA’S OPPORTUNISTIC APARTMENT DEVELOPMENT MARKET

Following Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement last Thursday (14th October), international boarders are set to reopen next month for overseas workers and students.

Crown Group Chairman and Group CEO Iwan Sunito says Australia is not prepared for the long-awaited return of expats and students, “we’re looking to rapidly acquire larger sites to accommodate our evolving business model which incorporates build to rent, hotels, residential apartments, commercial and retail” he added.

On the back of Mirvac settling 123 units at its Voyager tower in Melbourne’s Southbank during the July-September 2021 quarter, Mirvac residential head Stuart Penklis said the number of sales leads for new units have jumped to their highest level in two and a half years. Within the same quarter, across the Sydney market, Mirvac launched apartment projects in Willoughby, Green Square and Waverley as well as Tullamore Doncaster in Melbourne.
